    shrimp cocktail and margarita punch

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. shrimp cocktail and margarita punch 22 Dec '12 Years ago I was introduced to the 12 guideposts of acting laid out by Michael Shurtleff in Audition. It’s a witty, wise book, and what I love about it is that all these acting guideposts are really about the way real people behave in real life all the time. I’ve gotten to teach these guideposts while working with other actors, and one of my favorites is the one called opposites. It’s always fun, because you’ve been doing all these exercises to figure out your character, digging into who they really are by looking…

    friday faves: the hope edition

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. friday faves: the hope edition 14 Dec '12 Oh internet, you holiday tights wearing Christmas mall elf, I love you. Let’s see what you had to offer this week! I’ve written fairly often before about how this time of year can knock the wind right out of me, so it came as something of a gift when I opened up my Evernote friday faves notebook today and realized everything I had saved there had to do with hopefulness. My early Christmas gift, to you and me both: a little hope to carry into the cold and dark. Hope in the face…

    White Christmas

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. White Christmas 7 Dec '12 One of the strangest things about coming home from Kenya is that we walked back into Christmas. Full on, American, decorations-and-caroling Christmas. I know it’s really not that way – decorations were going up in November; heck, I even spent 4 days at Holiday House right before I left. But it reminded me of going to Colorado for spring break and snow, and then driving back into technicolor spring here in Arkansas. It was happening before you left, but the absence made the re-entry even more noticeable. When we walked into Heathrow straight into 3 story…

    boys and boots

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. boys and boots 10 Nov '12 So, you know, I have this giveaway going for a couple more days, and I’ve noticed something. Apparently men don’t enter giveaways. Which is a shame, really, for a few reasons. Are you listening, boys? Country Outfitter has great men’s boots. Women like men in boots. At least, l do… If you are not a boot fan yourself, you could GIVE THE $150 TO THE WOMAN YOU LOVE. That might be the only thing she likes better than seeing you in a new pair. (Ahem, Christmas.) So, in honor of the men and boys I…

I still don't wear Wranglers, though

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. I still don’t wear Wranglers, though 2 Nov '12 I learned a lot of things during my college years at Baylor, but one of the most interesting lessons occurred upon moving in with my freshman year roommate, Jennifer. I hadn’t met her before, although somehow we had communicated enough to show up with coordinating bedding. It’s important to have your priorities straight, people. Anyhow, Jennifer came to Baylor from Pflugerville – if you’re familiar with Texas (which I wasn’t), you know that Pflugerville is just north of Austin on I-35. You would probably also know (I didn’t) that you say that…

    beach life is hard

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. beach life is hard 27 Sep '12 We’re at the beach this week, so I thought it would be fun to share some favorite beachy posts from the past. This was originally posted in July of 2008, the summer that our friends the Chinos were on their summer-long camping adventure. Enjoy… ________________________________________ So, I’ve been thinking lately – I know that many of us are reading the chino summer travelogues and are quite enthralled with all their tales of camping adventure. There’s nothing like putting your family of six into a popup camper for the summer to make for some great…

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. friday faves 14 Sep '12 Oh internet, you inspirational period piece, I love you. Let’s see what you had to offer this week! Why politicians lie, and why we don’t care: a very well-thought out piece on lying, why we listen to it, and a few things we can do to combat it by my smart friend Amy Bradley-Hole. Now let’s throw God in there too: Rachel Held Evans on how God should fit into this whole political thing. When Jesus was asked about taxes, he didn’t hold up a coin, point to it dramatically, and shout to the crowd, “WHY…

    nineteen

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. nineteen 14 Aug '12 I can’t believe I’ve been married for nineteen years. It sounds so much older than I am… Bryan’s favorite way to describe an anniversary is to compare the years to a person’s life. So this year, our marriage is a sophomore in college. Which compares to how this anniversary feels – not quite the major milestone of twenty, but still impressive when I look at the number. Funny thing, too – I was a sophomore in college, nineteen years old – when I first met Bryan. Placed together on the same Young Life team, we were leaders…

    forever and for real

← → © 2012 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. forever and for real 13 Aug '12 This spring I went to the funeral of an addict. It was strange, for me, experiencing him this way, because I met the man at a place in his life where he was long sober. A counselor, in fact, for others. I knew that his addiction was there – in the past. That’s how it works, right? Sadly, not too many years later, his health took a turn for the worse. There was pain and prescription drugs. Eventually he fell back into abuse. I remember wondering how someone so many years down the road…

    enter the story

← → © 2011 Sarabeth Jones. All rights reserved. enter the story 24 Dec '11 This past Wednesday night, our church had a community Christmas party called Christmas REMIX. We celebrated all over the building, and my part in it all was to help create an experience – Enter the Story – to help connect us to the nativity, to give all of us a chance to slow down and remember. I thought I might share a little of that experience here. That night, small groups of people were led by a guide through a large open room in near darkness. They came upon simple scenes while hearing these words…
